BC 1 Call president Donna Grant visited the Village of Cumberland April 2 and met with the “boots on the ground” city workers overseeing the work that keeps its 4,447 residents safe while delivering extensive underground infrastructure to the community.

The Village of Cumberland has been an active member of BC 1 Call since October 1996 and has an extensive public works department dedicated to building and maintaining the village’s infrastructure.

The Village of Cumberland is currently working on two preventative maintenance programs, one focused on catch basin cleaning and the other on water main flushing. Shout-out to the entire dedicated team! Public Works Foreman Gavin Murgatroyd; Meredith Hawkins, Admin Tech – Operations; Joel Clarkston, Engineering Tech; Jason Wallace, Project Manager; and Sean Guthrie, Darryl Barker, Simon Pinfield, Peter Aitken, Dustin Cathro, Josh Torry, Richard Ethier, and Eric ‘Bud’ Houghton.

Cumberland’s origins reach back to the mid-19th century as a coal mining town. In 1958 it formally incorporated as the Village of Cumberland and has since transformed into a destination for outdoor recreation and tourism as well as a bedroom community for Courtenay, B.C.
