UPDATE: BC 1 Call Locate Request Software Changes
A locate request is a critical first step in preventing damage to underground infrastructure. To keep pace with today’s evolving technology and industry best practices, BC 1 Call’s locate request software continues to evolve as well. These updates ensure our processes reflect the needs and expectations of both our members and our users.
BC 1 Call, through the Before You Dig Partners, is pleased to announce a new round of software enhancements that will make it easier than ever to manage locate requests. The following five feature updates are planned to launch in February 2026.
1. New Ticket Number Format
Each locate request is assigned an eleven-digit ticket number. Currently, if a ticket is edited or relocated, a new ticket number is issued. With the new format, a three-digit revision number will be added after the original ticket number. When a ticket is updated, cancelled, or relocated, the revision number will increase sequentially, allowing the original ticket number to stay consistent throughout the job. This change simplifies tracking and communication for all parties involved.
Versioning Example:
Original ticket: 20261212345-000
Update: 20261212345-001
Relocate: 20261212345-002
Correction: 20261212345-003
2. Multiple-Dig-Site Mapping
Excavators will soon be able to map multiple dig locations on a single Project, Large Project, or Planning & Design ticket. This upgrade enhances “virtual white lining”, giving facility owners and locators more precise details when a job spans a large area. For example, instead of mapping an entire parking lot, an excavator installing signage at both ends can mark the exact dig spots on one ticket.
3. SMS Opt-In
Excavators will have the option to receive text messages from facility owners and locators who use this communication method. Because effective communication is essential to damage prevention, this feature allows for faster, more convenient coordination. The excavator’s SMS preference will appear directly on the ticket, making it easy for facility owners and locators to see who has opted in.
4. New Ticket Field: Ticket Action Reason
Currently, when information on a locate request is edited, the reason is added to the Remarks field. The new “Ticket Action Reason” field provides a dedicated space for this information, making it easier to identify why a ticket was changed and what was updated, while keeping the Remarks field available for key project details.
5. New (optional) Ticket Field: Job End Date
A new optional field will allow excavators to specify the expected completion date for a job. This helps all parties understand the expected project duration and identify which sites may still be active after an extended period.
More details about these upcoming enhancements are available on the Before You Dig Partners website. Additional information will be posted as we approach the February 2026 launch.
